Poetry was how I worked through my unspoken feelings for most of my life. But after a while, it wasn’t enough to express the ideas and emotions I wanted to explore. I started experimenting with short stories. It allowed me to bring characters who came alive in my head to a page.
My Story
On a fateful day, March 23rd 2022, I decided to write a short story about the first time my husband and I felt sparks. I posted it on Facebook as a short story. Readers asked me what happened next. It encouraged me to write more about these characters who started to take on a life of their own. That’s how Some Unspoken Thing was born.
I write stories about people who look like me, who experience life the way my family and friends do, because I want us to see ourselves in books. And to do that, I need to work on my writing craft.
Wordsmiths Guild has been an invaluable resource for my writing. By writing every week, I have been able to work on a set of skills with each prompt. Feedback helps to identify what needs honing and the next prompt is a new opportunity to work on that skill. Additionally, I’ve been able to experiment with genres within short stories and that has been really fun.
Writing doesn’t seem as insurmountable as it did before this group. The support of each member is what makes it really special. It is a place to go and cry about my imposter syndrome and my highs when I feel confident. Both, and everything in between, are welcomed and held in the space.
